502			_aA History of world societies grew out of the authors´desire to infuse new life into the broad study of human history. Initially, this desire led us to write A History of Western Society; when the response to that work was quite favorable, we were encouraged to extend our basic approach to global history. Although this proved to be an enormous undertaking, we have fond hopes that intense effort, coupled with careful criticism from area specialists and experienced teachers, has achieved the intended result.
